Men Trapped in Men's Bodies: Narratives of Autogynephilic Transsexualism
By Anne A. Lawrence
Published in 2013, Men Trapped in Men's Bodies: Narratives of Autogynephilic Transsexualism presents excerpts from 249 first-person narratives by MtF transsexuals who experience autogynephilia, a male's propensity to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a female. The title is an ironic commentary on the trope that MtF transsexuals are "women trapped in men's bodies." The book's informants explain why this trope is inaccurate.
The book is available for purchase in hardcover, softcover, and electronic formats at Amazon. Downloadable, unofficial copies of the book are also widely available online, so I have acquiesced to this and provided a downloadable copy in PDF format here.
Selected reviews from academic journals:
"Lawrence has written a book that will be of great value to researchers, clinicians, lay people, and, perhaps most importantly of all, to people who experience autogynephilic feelings and desires."
- Richard A. Lippa, PhD; Archives of Sexual Behavior, 44, 1511-1514. (2015)
"This book is necessary reading for anyone interested in the field of gender dysphoria and transgender experiences. Clinicians and researchers alike will benefit. The book will also be valuable to men who seek to resolve their gender dysphoria"
- Richard A. Carroll, PhD; Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, 40, 73-75. (2014)
"Lawrence is methodical, linear and logical, precise, and exhaustive . . . . [she] also comes across in the book as open, ethical, kind, and genuinely caring about the fate of transgender people."
- Margaret Nichols, PhD; Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, 40, 71-73. (2014)
"I admire the nifty title of this book. Lawrence . . . skillfully exposes the fallacy of the culturally accepted trope, 'I am a woman trapped in a man’s body.' Lawrence has a prodigious capacity to be logical . . . . Readers should be prepared for the power of Lawrence's logic."
- Stephen B. Levine, MD; Sex Roles, 70, 158-160. (2014)
